Instructions for caregivers and teachers after a wildfire
As with adults, a devastating fire can be a traumatic experience for children and adolescents. Often the wildfires affect entire communities, further undermining a child's sense of safety and normalcy in life.
In such destabilizing circumstances, children need support from those close to them and often seek guidance on how to manage their emotions and understand and regulate their reactions. Parents, caregivers, and/or teachers can help children and adolescents cope after a fire by remaining calm and, reassuring them that everything will be okay. Emphasis should be placed on establishing and strengthening supportive relationships and understanding children and adolescents' reactions.
On the occasion of the devastating fires that affect our fellow citizens in various parts of Greece, every summer, CAMHI offers useful tips and guidelines, written with caregivers and teachers in mind, in the attached document. This concise guide may enhance their ability to help children and adolescents cope psychologically in the event of a catastrophic fire.
